Unfortunately, discrimination is present throughout all walks of life. A similar experience happened to me when I became pregnant. I was working for a local attorney and called in to work one day so go visit the doctor. On the initial phone call the staff, including the attorney, were very apologetic stating that they hope I returned soon and felt better. Well, I called the next day to state my current situation only to welcome an unwanted, "Well we will have to call you back before you return to work." They called me back alrighty, to state that I need not return. My feeling were really hurt. Later after finding out that I had a possible law suit, my pride was hurt. Nevertheless, we live, learn, move on and hopefully grow wise enough to not treat others the way that we have been treated.

Discrimination is a widespread issue. I chose it because I feel that everyone can relate to it and in an effort to remind everyone of how we may sometimes make our client's or other people in our lives feel discriminated against. I am a strong believer that it is not always our intentions that have to be good but also our delivery of these intentions so that they are not perceived incorrectly.

I too have felt discriminated against, in several areas. One of which when I was training for a management position and found out I was pregnant. The training stopped. Another time, I can't say with 100% certainty, but I believe it was based on my size. And finally, to me, the biggest one, was on race, by a woman of my own race. I was at a point in my life where I was working two jobs and trying to go back to college and raise my son on my own. I had applied for financial assistance (long story- but my childs' father gave up all rights and I don't receive child support. In the interview, I was told I need to find one job and quit school, also, if I couldn't afford to have a child I shouldn't have had any. What I felt like she was implying was that white women were'nt supposed to need government assistance, and what was wrong with me. I believe she claimed I was denied benefits because my car was too new. That same car... on that very same day... had to be towed away from DHR because it wouldn't start. I left crying... how could someone be so mean and heartless?

You are correct, discrimination is everywhere and as for black and white relations in this country, I don’t see a whole lot of improvement. Having grown up in the Navy, I was isolated from mainstream discrimination because the nature of our mission, we all worked as a team. I am not saying the Navy is free of discrimination because as long as there are people involved and or present, some level of discrimination is certain to exist. This topic is well worth investigating and a new pair of eyes on the subject might be helpful. I am tired of hearing the same old rhetoric from the Rev. Jessie Jackson and others who have no other profession or agenda than to promote separation and create controversy. Rex
